Service Level
Commission prices hinge on the Service Level; Basic and Premium.
The base price denotes the minimum cost for a commission at that level.
Extra detail and quality listed in the other sections operate on a percentage system. When you choose an extra that displays +30%, it means using this option will add +30% to the base price to have it done. If you choose multiple extra-quality options, they are added together (+30% + +10% = +40%). In the rare case a -% appears, it signifies this option will reduce the price of the whole commission after the total price is calculated.
An Example:
A BASIC commission (£6) of an INKED character (+40%) with FLAT-COLOUR (+10%) and a REGULAR background (+40%) will cost £11.40p,
because £6 x 1.9 = £11.40p!
If you are still confused on how this works, you may ask the artist for a price quote on a commission cost with the options you'd like.
-

Commission Process
-
Preliminary
-
Client notifies Artist if he is free
A client should message the artist to check and confirm a space is open before proceeding. The client may give a brief description of their request as well.
The client should wait for the artist to respond.
-
Artist notifies Client of their status
The artist will reply back to the client, if the artist is free and the request sounds acceptable the slot will be confirmed. If it does not, the commission process ends here.
-
Client explains their request to the Artist
If the client's request is accepted, the client must provide as much information of what they want drawn as clearly as possible. The artist will ask questions and give the client any warnings or advice regarding their commission before work is undertaken. Once all details have been settled, the artist will attempt to complete the artwork as soon as possible.
If the client can provide any reference images of previous drawings, this will aid the artist in getting the right look much more easily.
-
Mid-commission
-
Drawing phase
Please allow time for a commission to be drawn, it will not likely be completed the same day, the next day or the day after that.
-
Sketch check
Providing the commission is not a quick sketch, the artist will notify the client that they have progressed far enough to show some results, especially if this is requested by the client earlier. If there are inaccuracies or changes to be made, the client will have the chance to say so during this phase, the artist will go into the correction phase to fix these problems to return to the sketch check. If everything is fine, the artist will move to the next phase.
-
Correction phase
If errors have been made, changes required or it needs to be re-drawn, this is where the artist will go back to make the necessary changes to satisfy the new criteria. Similar to Drawing phase, and especially if re-drawn, please wait patiently for the artist to make the changes.
-
Continuation phase
Once the client is happy with the basic look of the commission, the artist will proceed to finish off the drawing. The client can request another sketch check to see if the near-end result is going nicely, if not, it continues until the commission is complete.
-
Finishing up
-
Proof of Completion
Providing that the client has not seen a recent sketch check or they are paranoid, the artist will present a low-quality version of the final product as proof of completion. The artist has the right to withhold the proper version until payment has been made.
-
Client pays
At this time, the client should preferably use
Paypal
to send funds in the exact amount agreed upon at the start of the commission process.
-
Commission ends
Once the artist has been paid, the artist will send over a proper copy of the commission and ask for any file-types, sizes and qualities the client might want if it wasn't discussed earlier. The commission ends and everybody gets what they wanted.
-
Artist's Rights
-
To refuse commissions based on the requested subject-matter
I have the right to refuse service based on the subject-matter requested of me by a client, while I do accept most requests I refuse to draw sexually artwork involving sexual intercourse or other hardcore forms of pornography. I will also refuse commissions based on illegal content, that includes but not limited to inappropriate
underaged
characters (no
pedo
art) or racism (except in justified context).
-
To refuse commissions based on gross misconduct and rude comments from the client
I have the right to not only refuse, but also terminate existing commissions and black-list clients who disrespect me by swearing, threatening me, attempting to defraud me and any other rude comments. Black-listed clients will be forbidden to commission again, fellow artists will be notified of a rude client's behaviour to prevent it happening again to anybody else. I don't (and never will) be paid enough to take crap from irate clients so don't get your knickers in a twist when I say you're banned.
-
To refuse commissions based on a closed/clearing status set by the artist
Even if a client's commission request meets standards, I have a right to refuse any more based on the fact that I want to close shop or take a break from it all. Clients still pending commissions will usually be kept intact until they are completed, as to avoid wasting anybody's time. In the event that even pending clients need to be cancelled, I will try to keep in mind those who have been cancelled, and if they wish to recommission me again later I will grant them priority in the queue.
-
To use artistic license on commissioned artwork
I have the right to have creative permission to add or interpret vague or omitted descriptions how I see fit so long as it does not impact the quality and aesthetics of the artwork. Please note that I will take some care in asking for more detail on requests to avoid this should the client be hoping for something fairly specific.
-
To refuse refunds for trivial claims
While I would be happy to refund for cancelled commissions (assuming I actually ask up-front as opposed to asking at the end of the process), I will not offer refunds under trivial, cheap-shot excuses. Claiming that you want a refund because I drew 'crap' artwork for you, or under the impression I didn't do it in the right style is not an acceptable reason for a refund nor as as a reason to start a drawing over from the beginning.
-
To refuse to hand over the full-resolution commission without pay
To prevent getting ripped off by unsavoury customers, I will not show an unverified client a full-resolution copy of the artwork until payment has been confirmed and sent. If a client wishes to view the commissioned artwork without paying, they may view a low-quality, crippled version created to show proof of completion but with quality too low to be considered useful.
-
To refuse or halt commissions due to important personal issues
As I am an art-university student and also handling a weekend job, I cannot guarantee that I will be willing and able to work on commissions seven days a week. Some weeks I may be fairly free, others I will be totally swamped with work that cannot be left late. I ask clients to respect that my whole life isn't devoted to the commission task and that time should be allowed to sort school, work and play. In times where I am too busy I will limit the amount of commission slots available, if I am cutting it way too close I will temporarily halt all pending and current commissions to get it sorted first.
-
Client's Rights and Privileges
-
To request corrections and changes on commissioned artwork
If the commissioned artwork contains errors or the client wishes to add or change things, they are allowed to request the artist to make corrections during the 'sketch confirmation' phases. The advised maximum amount of times a work can be corrected can be one re-draw attempt (to do the artwork again with specific changes) or three minor corrections (each correction is an attempt to fix minor issues with a drawing). The artist prefers the amount of attempts for correcting a commissioned drawing to a minimum, please give him ALL the information and direction you can provide to ensure all corrections can be dealt with all at once, instead of multiple times.
-
To cancel or resubmit a commission request (in good time)
If the client wishes to cancel or resubmit their commission, they can do so free of charge so long as they notify the artist BEFORE their commission is undertaken. Depending on the progress of the commissioned piece, there may be a cancellation fee of 20% of the previously negotiated price. Failure to pay this fee without justifiable circumstances can involve black-listing to prevent any future commissions as well as notification of other fellow artists for the refusal.
-
To place a passive placeholder
A client may want to reserve a place for a commissioned artwork to think about later, it is allowed but only under the conditions that other clients will take priority until the passive client notifies they are active. If the artist is in the middle of another client's commission, the previously passive client must wait until it is finished before they can take their turn. The artist may only hold a slot open for one week, then notification must be made to extend it.
-
Export the commissioned artwork in any image format or size
The client can ask the artist to export in any of the three standard image formats (.
jpg
, .
png
or .gif) or the original source file of
Photoshop
.
psd
. The artist can export these formats to suit the quality, file-size and image size the client wishes. This includes the full-resolution image (I operate on large sizes for quality), reduced sizes suitable for web,
JPEG
compression (Max quality to low),
PNG
transparencies, 8-bit
PNG
/GIF colour tables (Max 256, can be reduced to save space) and of course, the original
PSD
file.
The artist very rarely draws in traditional pencil and paper any more, thus 'original drawing' requests will not be possible, especially as the artist is not able to send such products through the mail any way.
-
To request status updates on a commission in progress
Clients will have the right to remind the artist from time to time on the status of their commission. It is recommended that three days should be left for the artist to get over any outstanding issues before the reminder. Constant, impatient or rude reminders will be treated seriously and may result in termination of the commission and black-listing on the client.
-
To remain Anonymous and respect their right to privacy
This section is relevant to when I display names and progress of my clients in any of my journals/
websites
. A client is allowed to ask if their name can be kept secret from public display, either as Anonymous or a pseudonym of their choice. They may even be allowed to ask the artist to completely remove a slot from view, as if the artist doesn't even have a slot so it can be commissioned in secret.
-
Negotiable Rights
-
Distributing artwork in public
Initially, permission to redistribute and resize a commissioned drawing is allowed depending on the subject matter of the commission, permission to freely-distribute may be limited or unavailable in some cases. The artist and client must negotiate the terms of the commissioned artworks in public. The artist will try to make it clear of the redistribution terms before work is undertaken and to inform the client of such.
-
Editing and Altering the commissioned artwork
Normally the client is disallowed to edit or alter commissioned artwork only under these exceptions;
* The client is allowed to commission an uncoloured drawing to later colour themselves or ask others. (Artist draws, client colours)
* Crop the artwork for use in icons or thumbnails

FAQs
-
Commission Content and Quality
-
Are you a very good artist?
Answer: Yes and no, while I am an artist of satisfactory quality I am not quite epic material just yet. I'm hoping to use commissions as an excuse to continue practising and evolving as an artist. My rates are fairly cheap but I assure that I will do my very best to ensure a commission turns out to a client's expectations, or as close to as possible.
-
Do you have any examples I can look at to determine your artistic talent?
Answer: Yes! You can find my main gallery on
deviantART
at
http://louisisthebest007.deviantart.com
. I will try to provide direct examples of commission options in the future to help clients easily identify what options detail beyond the text descriptions.
-
What kind of commission do you actually do?
Answer: Subject-wise, I will attempt to draw anything you wish. Be it human, robot,
anthro
, alien for characters. Even scenes, objects and what have you. I am open-minded and will take commissions based around fetishes so long as it is tasteful. I will not ridicule you for your deviancy so feel free to ask if I am willing to draw such material, the worst that can happen is that I decline. I am free to draw clean and mature commission content, the general rule is if it's allowed in
deviantART
, I'll do it.
-
What commission content do you disallow?
Quick-Answer: While I can attempt tasteful nudity, I will not draw sexually-explicit scenes or adult content except under the experimental 'Unrestricted' service level which removes that limitation.
-
Payment and Prices
-
How do I pay you for a commission?
Quick-Answer: My only method of accepting payment is through
paypal
, I won't reveal my
paypal
email until it is required by myself towards the end.
-
I want to pay in [currency], but all you're showing is pounds sterling. Why don't you have any dollar conversions?
Answer: As I am
british
, I prefer the ending currency to be in pounds so it can be usable in my country. Since I can only be paid through
paypal
you can use their service to make any currency exchanges for payment. The reason I do not mention any dollar prices is because the exchange rate can change any time and any amount, any amount I write could be way more in a few days. I can quote you the commission prices when you ask them at the time of sending a message.
-
Why the heck is Unrestricted so expensive?
Answer: The reason it's so expensive is because I don't really want to draw porn, but since if anybody is desperate enough to pay up, I can live with the guilt. The same service as Premium but with no content restrictions. Please note that the Unrestricted tariff is
EXPERIMENTAL
, and subject for removal or change at any time. I'm skeptical about it enough as it is.
-
What is the basis for the commission prices, what are they in comparison to?
Answer: My basic rate is set just above the minimum wage in the UK which is 5.80 per hour for over 21s. Premium being the logical two hours of work. This is also a good indication of the amount of time working I will attempt to apply into commissioned artworks.
-
Client Issues
-
What is the difference to the client being Verified or Unverified?
Answer: I consider an Unverified client to be someone who I have not met before or conducted services with before, basically a person who is a stranger to me. Unverified clients are not singled-out as untrustworthy, however to protect myself I will not release commission artworks without payment. Should a client successfully pay for a commission (without defrauding me by cancelling a payment), they will technically become a VERIFIED client, trustworthy enough to relax payment rules.
Good friends I have known for a long time are already verified to the highest level in my regard, returning clients may also receive such a status if they prove themselves trustworthy and courteous during the commission process.
-
How should I behave during the commission process?
Answer: While I don't expect you to be perfect or whatever 'behaviour' any of us think the question is saying, but it would be nice if the client could be patient, clear and calm. Even if your behaviour through the process isn't bad enough to warrant termination or black-listing; bad attitudes, impatient nagging, fickle request changes and other time-wasting actions can irritate me greatly if it's not justified. I have the right to refuse future commissions to avoid having to deal with troublesome clients again.
Tips to a make an artist happy:
* Please remain patient while waiting for any sketch-checks or updates, a few days minimum per reminder.
* Please word reminders, questions, request politely.
* Do not make outrageous demands or threats, I am a learning artist, not a miracle worker.
* Please remain civil if i decline commissions or present bad news.
-
Hey! How come you completed someone else's commission piece when I was before them?
Answer: Considering the time and effort made to artwork, there are times when I become frustrated or simply lose inspiration when working on a particular piece. After a break I may consider starting on someone else's piece to bring back some inspiration to keep things flowing. I simply can't hold everybody up because I stumbled on one person's commission, so on occasion one or even two clients may be completed.
Do not take this the wrong way, I am not ignoring any clients I defer, I am only human and can only work so long in a state of physical and mental focus.
For instance, if there are three clients and you are the second one, if I should complete the third client before you, it might be because I was in the middle of your piece and decided to get the third piece done as it might been fairly simple and quick to complete. However! Should a fourth client be accepted, I will not defer the second client again as by now the second client might have been waiting quite a while and already halfway done. So clients should not worry that they will be perpetually deferred until the end of time.
